Progress depends on a number of factors
Time devoted to learning
The time needed to reach an intermediate level (B1/B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) depends mainly on the number of hours you devote to learning. In general, it takes around **300 to 400 hours** of active study to reach this level, but this can vary depending on your regularity and the quality of your learning.
Your initial level
If you are starting from scratch, the process will take longer than if you already have some basic knowledge. An absolute beginner (A1) will require more effort to progress to an intermediate level than a learner already at an elementary level (A2).
Learning methods influence speed
Intensive learning
With an intensive method, such as daily lessons or complete immersion, you could reach an intermediate level in **3 to 6 months**. This involves several hours of learning every day, combining online lessons, practical exercises and immersion in the language (films, podcasts, exchanges with native speakers).
Moderate learning
With a more traditional learning frequency, such as **2 to 3 hours per week**, it will take between **12 and 18 months** to reach an intermediate level. This approach is suitable for those learning English alongside their studies or work.
Factors that speed up learning
Regular practice
The key to making rapid progress is to practise English regularly. Learners who devote a little time each day to listening, reading, speaking or writing in English make faster progress than those who do so only occasionally.
Immersion in the language
Immersion, even virtual immersion, can considerably speed up your progress. Watching series in VO, listening to podcasts or chatting to English speakers exposes you to the language and helps you to understand and use it naturally.
Visible results with good organisation
Setting clear objectives
Setting yourself specific goals, such as learning a certain number of words or managing to hold a basic conversation, helps you to stay motivated and measure your progress.
Use a variety of methods
Combining several methods - online courses, applications such as Duolingo or Babbel, simple reading and interaction in English - makes learning more effective and stimulating.
Personal progression
Every learner is different
Learning speed varies according to your motivation, your ability to assimilate new information and your exposure to English. Some people progress more quickly because of their natural aptitude for languages or previous learning experience.
A path to autonomy
Reaching an intermediate level will enable you to understand and take part in conversations on a variety of subjects. At this stage, you will be able to learn more independently, which will facilitate your progress towards an advanced level.
